Rome Rome

SINOPSIS

"Rome" is the saga of two ordinary Roman soldiers and their families. An intimate drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, and husbands and wives, it chronicles epic times that saw the fall of a republic and the creation of an empire. The series begins in 52 BC, as Gaius Julius Caesar has completed his masterful conquest of Gaul after eight years of war, and is preparing to return to Rome. He heads home with thousands of loyal battle-hardened men, huge amounts of loot in gold and slaves, and a populist agenda for radical social change. Terrified, the aristocracy threatens to prosecute Caesar for war crimes as soon as he sets foot in Rome. Caesar's old friend and mentor, Pompey Magnus, attempts to foment mutiny in order to maintain the balance of power. Two of Caesar's soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, thwart Pompey's plan and in the process, win the eternal gratitude of Caesar and the Julian clan, affording the two plebian officers an intimate view of the ruling class. The fates of Pullo and Vorenus become entwined with those of Caesar, Mark Antony, Cleopatra and the boy Octavian, a strange and awkward child who, by political guile and bloody force, will become the first emperor of Rome.

Cast and Crew

Rome Rome
Lucius Vorenus
Played By Kevin McKidd

The hard essence of a professional Roman soldier. Honorable and severe, he is unforgiving and pitiless when crossed. A dour and pragmatic man, with a tendency towards self-laceration.

Rome Rome
Titus Pullo
Played By Ray Stevenson

A ferocious lover of life, possessing the courage and loyalty of a warrior, but the morality of a pirate. A man of huge appetites and wild passions. Impulsive, unreflective, optimistic, conceited, generous, and brutal.

Rome Rome
Julius Caesar
Played By CiarĂ¡n Hinds

In a strict class-ridden society, Caesar descends from one of the oldest and noblest of patrician families. Energetic, brilliant, methodical, he is a man driven—electrified even—by a primordial need for dominance. He has very little room for regular human emotions; he can be witty and charming or warm and caring, but these qualities are always performances, produced as needed and rarely prompted by genuine feeling.

Rome Rome
Pompey Magnus
Played By Kenneth Cranham

The grand old oak of Roman arms; scourge of the Illyrian pirates, Conqueror of Syria and Spain. In a society where soldiers are superstars, Pompey has risen from provincial commoner to become a beloved national hero. A lion in the winter of his years, Pompey has settled into a comfortable life of repose and adulation.

Rome Rome
Atia of the Julii
Played By Polly Walker

Niece of Caesar, Atia of the Julii is snobbish, willful, cunning, and sexually voracious. In a culture in which women lack formal power and men leave for years on military campaigns, the wives, daughters, and mothers have built powerful networks and alliances completely independent of the men's worlds. Atia is among the women who serve as the shadow rulers of Rome.

Rome Rome
Mark Antony
Played By James Purefoy

Immensely brave, handsome, and dashing, Mark Antony is loved by his men and adored by women. Arrogant and impulsive, he is impatient with political niceties beyond rousing a mob or charging full tilt at an enemy.

Rome Rome
Servilia of the Junii
Played By Lindsay Duncan

The mother of Brutus, and the erstwhile lover of Caesar. Servilia of the Junii is a staunchly Republican aristocrat. Sophisticated, elegant, and subtle, she considers herself several rungs above Atia in the social hierarchy, a fact that chafes Atia.

Rome Rome
Niobe
Played By Indira Varma

A peasant princess from a large and influential Roman clan, Niobe is proud, beautiful, and selfishly devoted to the interests of herself and her family. She managed eight years thinking her husband, Vorenus, would not return from battle.

Rome Rome
Gaius Octavian
Played By Max Pirkis

Son of Atia, great-nephew of Caesar, Gaius Octavian is gifted with uncommon intelligence and clarity of vision, yet tends to withdraw into melancholy and isolation.

Octavia of the Julii
Played By Kerry Condon

The beautiful but weak-willed sister of Octavian. Her mother's pawn, she hides simmering resentment beneath the guise of a dutiful daughter.

Rome Rome
Quintus Pompey
Played By Rick Warden

The son of Pompey Magnus. A nasty melding of sadistic brutality and animal cunning. A source of alarm even to Pompey's closest allies, Quintus' worst instincts are kept in check only by his reverential love of his father.

An amiable but rapacious brigand and quondam horse trader. Timon is one of Atia's lovers and her mercenary ally.

Rome Rome
Mascius
Played By Michael Nardone

An old comrade of Vorenus and Pullo's from the battlefields, Mascius lobbied Vorenus on behalf of their fellow veterans to push Caesar for land, then compromised his noble intentions by accepting a personal payoff to convince them to accept rough land near Germany. When he later lost his farm to "crooked dice," he returned to Rome in search of work, only to hear Vorenus was in charge of the underworld.

Rome Rome
Eirene
Played By Chiara Mastalli

A simple slave girl with very few expectations for her life, Pullo found Eirene on an abandoned slave cart in the country, and brought her to Rome. He convinced Niobe and Vorenus to take her in as a servant, and while working for them she fell in love with a fellow servant and became engaged, which enraged Pullo — who killed the boy. After some time passed, he managed to win over her affections again, and convince her to marry him.

Rome Rome
Cleopatra
Played By Lyndsey Marshal

The powerful Queen of Egypt solidified her grip on the throne by consummating her liaison with Caesar during his stay in Egypt, shortly after a passionate night with Pullo. She gave birth to a son, Caesarion, and claims Caesar is the father. Accustomed to power (she co-ruled Egypt with her younger brother, Ptolemy) and determined to maintain it, the strong-willed monarch trusts no one and refuses to stay subordinate to any man.

Marcus Agrippa
Played By Allen Leech

Octavian's top soldier and right-hand man, Agrippa is earnest and humble, a sharp contrast to his peers. He also happens to be smitten with Octavian's sister.

Rome Rome
Maecenas
Played By Alex Wyndham

Octavian's advisor is also a poet and a speechwriter.

Rome Rome
Gaius Octavian
Played By Simon Woods

Now known as Caesar Octavian, Atia's son has grown into a soldier and a man — stepping into his late great uncle's shoes...in more ways than one.

Rome Rome
Caesarion
Played By Nicolo Brecci

Cleopatra claims her sullen four-year-old is the son of Caesar, although Vorenus and Pullo know he could just as easily be the son of Pullo after a secretive and heated night in the desert. And though Caesar presented the son as his own in Egypt, he refused to name the boy his heir (He chose his grand-nephew, Octavian, instead.).

Rome Rome
Levi
Played By Nigel Lindsay
